Understanding the Music of Gerry Mulligan

Sun. April 14, 11:00 Concert Hall

This lecture will be discussing the compositional techniques utilized by Gerry Mulligan. It
will focus on his use of scales and patterns in melodic construction, his choices for
instruments and voicing techniques in ensembles, his harmonic vocabulary when creating compositions, and the overall characteristics of his compositions. Utilizing his personal manuscripts, published scores, and interviews with his former band mates I will help explain the techniques utilized by this influential composer. I will also be performing
selected works by Gerry Mulligan to showcase his compositions.
